Large Lipomas What Is a Lipoma? A lipoma is a lump of fat that grows in your body’s soft tissues. Though it’s classified as a tumor, it’s usually harmless. Lipomas tend to grow slowly, often over a period of months or years. They are usually small (usually less than inches across).

Sometimes larger lipomas do occur, with some reaching almost inches across. There is a very rare form of cancer known as liposarcoma that occurs within fatty tissue and may look like a deep lipoma. A lipoma that grows quickly or is painful should be checked out by a doctor , and may need a biopsy.

Ultrasound or other imaging tests, for instance, a CT scan or MRI especially if the lipoma is large, has unusual features or appears to be deeper than the fatty tissue.

There is a slight chance that a lump which resembles a lipoma can actually be a kind of cancer known as liposarcoma. Lipoma is a noncancerous (benign) tumor does not grow larger. It is a harmless fat lump that moves when given a pressure. Applying a gentle pressure on capsulized fat is one of the diagnosing techniques to identify lipoma and differentiate it from the malignant tumor, which is quite firm and immovable. Sometimes these soft, usually mobile masses can grow in size and become an aesthetic or functional concern.

Excision is best done when the lesions are smaller. If your lipoma is large or deep , you may be given general anesthesia. General anesthesia will keep you asleep and free from pain during surgery.
