Police checks for volunteers

Do volunteer police checks work? What is a police check? Can volunteers pay for DBS checks? Basic DBS checks can be used for any position or purpose, however certain roles may require a higher level of check. More information about eligibility can be found here.


Basic, Standard and Enhanced Disclosure Checks The same three levels of DBS checks apply to volunteers in the same way as paid workers.

A basic DBS check is just verification of the current information held about you on the police computer in terms of unspent convictions. DBS checks for volunteers typically follow the same process as the checks for those in paid employment. The organisation provides the volunteer with an application form, which must then be returned with several forms of identification. The DBS will then issue a certificate to the applicant to provide them with the result of the check. An integral component of engaging volunteers is determining the best match – a match that benefits the volunteer , the organization and ensures the safety of individuals served.


For some volunteer roles, a police record check would be an important step in the screening process. A wide range of organizations are requiring employees and volunteers to provide police record checks. Please note: A Volunteer National Police Check can only be used for volunteer purposes when the work to be completed is unpaid (work experience, charity or community services) and cannot be used for Immigration, Visa or IVF applications.
