Passport number format

What is a passport card number? Usually passport booklets are issued in Type format , while identity cards and passport cards typically use the Type format. The machine-readable zone of a Type travel document spans two lines, and each line is characters long.

Don’t include personal or financial information like your National Insurance number or credit card details. Your passport number is a unique digit number allocated to each UK passport upon production. Modern, US, bio-metric passports have 9-digit (numeric) passport numbers. This number also holds information on where the passport was issued. This unique number thus becomes the unique identification number of the individual passport holder.


Standard pages: €30. An Irish passport enables the bearer to travel internationally and serves as evidence of Irish nationality and citizenship of the European Union. Passport card: €35.

Open the passport from the front and look at the very bottom of the first page on your right. Look at the very top of the first page and you will see the passport number has been perforated across the top of the page. The passport number can be found here in bold numbers.


This has been done across the top of all the pages of the passport. The serial number is perforated from page through to the rear cover of the passport. The thin film patch contains a unique serial number which consists of alpha characters and numeric.


This page is protected by a thin ilm of laminate which includes several dificult to forge holographic features to protect the holder’s personal details. This laminate contains a unique serial number which is ‘cut’ into the metallised area beneath the holder’s image. The letter ‘O’ and the number ‘0’ can look very similar. You will only ever see the number ‘0’.


Many countries have either begun issuing or plan to issue biometric passports that contains an embedded microchip, making them machine-readable and difficult to counterfeit. It is the first characters of the 2nd line of the MRZ. It can contain letters as well as numbers. Do not use spaces when entering your passport number , even if they appear in your actual passport (see example below).


An emergency passport , or temporary passport , is issued when you’ve lost your passport or had it stolen and you don’t have time to apply for a new one.

For example, if you left your passport on the plane by accident and therefore cannot board your connecting flight, you may call your embassy and be issued an emergency one-way passport that will get you home. Basic passport checks. If you are referring to the first letter of the passport number , it does not denote anything.


It is just an alpha sequence to go with the numeric sequence as far as I know. An alpha character can take different letters (A to Z) instead of the that are normally possible with numbers (to 9).
