The deadly disease can also cause blindness, weakness and movement disorders. Long-term travellers, persons involved in outdoor recreational activities or on work assignments going to endemic areas are at risk, especially those visiting rural areas, farms, rice fields and irrigation areas. The virus is found in pigs and birds, and is passed to mosquitoes when they bite infected animals. It cannot be spread from person to person. While most infections result in little or no symptoms, occasional inflammation of the brain occurs. In these cases, symptoms may include headache, vomiting, fever, confusion and seizures.

For most travelers to Asia, the risk for JE is very low but varies based on destination, length of travel, season, and activities.

Most people infected with JE do not have symptoms or have only mild symptoms. It typically occurs in areas where rice growing and pig farming occur together, namely most of Asia, part of Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait. Almost 200cases are estimated to occur each year. You should not have the vaccine if you have had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)to it or any of its ingredients in the past. Transmission occurs principally in rural agricultural locations where flooding irrigation is practised – some of which may be near or within urban centres. It reinforces the importance of checking vaccinations with a travel doctor before travelling anywhere. The mosquito that spreads the infection favours breeding sites in and around rice paddies and bites mostly around dusk. It is found in South-East Asia and the Indian subcontinent.


There is currently no cure for the condition. According to the CDC website, the risk of contracting this disease is minimal. The mosquitoes that transmit JE feed predominantly during the night, between dusk to dawn and are prolific in rural areas, where rice cultivation and pig farming are common.

JE virus is transmitted by Culex species mosquitoes throughout Asia, a region supporting high rates of tourism and with an indigenous population of billion people.
